Leadership for Learning

Standard 18: Learners are immersed in an environment that fosters lifelong skills including creativity, curiosity, risk taking, collaboration, and design thinking.

Self-Rating: 3

Conditions within most aspects of the institution promote learners’ lifelong skills.  Learners engage in experiences that develop the non-academic skills important for their next steps in learning and for future success.  Collectively, the learning experiences build skills in creativity, curiosity, risk taking, collaboration, and design thinking.

Evidence that supports this rating is that students can make real-world connections, participate in county government day, and  do mock job interviews.  Computer literacy begins in elementary and beginning keyboarding is taught in elementary.  Conflict resolution is discussed and role playing occurs in classes to demonstrate and teach positive conflict resolution techniques.

The instructional environment ensures active engagement of learners. For example, community members help by helping with mock job interviews. Teachers provide instruction in conflict resolution, and students participate in county government day. In industrial technology, students learn many real-life skills, such as how to change oil and build furniture.  In English classes, students do job shadowing and write resumes.  Real world connections are made in all grade levels.  Culturally diverse projects are completed in art and creativity is encouraged.  Dioramas are created in some grade levels to depict life styles of Native American groups.  Many classes use You Tube to show students how to draw. Beginning keyboarding is taught in elementary.  Computer literacy skills begin in kindergarten as each elementary student has their own laptop.

Students participate with confidence because they have been given ample opportunities through teaching and practice in the classroom.  Lessons are retaught when necessary.  Checklists are kept and rubrics are used to track progress on specific lifelong skills.

Strategies are employed to provide learners agency through their learning by allowing students to work with  peer chosen groups.  Students are given choices of projects to complete.   Students are encouraged to job shadow in fields that interest them.  Students are encouraged to select library books that  foster their curiosity. Students are encouraged to explore and take risks by deciding elective classes that interest them. Students are encouraged to visit career nights and college nights.  Students are also encouraged to meet with college representatives who visit the school.
